Using Visual Journals in a Primary Classroom
Thursday February 27, 2025 9:00am - 10:00am MST
Our classrooms are dynamic learning spaces where students learn through hands-on experiences, mentor texts, and discussions. Once knowledge is constructed, our students illustrate, label, create timelines, and write in their visual journals. We provide frameworks and our students represent their learning. This process fosters deep understanding and gives our students agency in their learning. It is completely different than highlighting passages on a worksheet, fill-in the blanks, and word searches often found in a traditional worksheet unit. Join us on this journey! It is time to step away from the photocopier.

I can do math
Thursday February 27, 2025 1:00pm - 2:00pm MST
Learn more about the first steps in building a strong mathematical foundation in your primary students. Using the Principles of Effective Instruction by Barak Rosenshine, Rebecca will share how she structures her grade 1 math lessons. She will share how she begins her lessons with math songs and her free 40 weeks of math warm ups and number talks. Then, she will talk about guided practice, checking for understanding, hands- on math tasks and scaffolding steps to differentiate and extend the learning. Rebecca often uses the JUMP math teacher’s guide and the JUMP math scope and sequence but a math journal instead of the JUMP assessment and practice books. The result of these techniques is a class of students who master math concepts.

I can read
Thursday February 27, 2025 2:20pm - 3:20pm MST
If your students are at the beginning of their reading journey, come and learn more about some best practices to support their growth. Using the outcomes in the new language arts curriculum, Rebecca will share more about her literacy program: phonemic awareness, phonics, poetry, small group reading instruction (with decodable books) and read aloud programs. You will gain an understanding of how to teach letter sounds and move students along to be able to read trade and early chapter books. Rebecca has a masters in language and literacy from UBC and has recently completed the UFLI trainer program.

Decolonization: Equitable Education for All Students
Friday February 28, 2025 11:40am - 12:40pm MST
Decolonization is a scary word for some. Join me to learn that the work of decolonization is not about guilt or shame- it is about making education more equitable for Indigenous students and all students. It is not about Western culture being bad, either. It is about including all voices, points of view, and ways of being equally. Educators always say, "Just tell me how to do it." In this session, I will share what to look for, where and how to start, strategies to use, resources for planning, and missteps to avoid when working toward decolonizing education.
